I found the little teeny parcourse in a school near my house (off Alcatraz in Oakland). Those who went outdoors in the 70s will likely remember this phenomenon--various exercises set up in an area where you can also run outdoors. It's brilliant and I have no idea why they fell out of favor--I assume just that there's no profit model, it's something a city installs for the good of its citizens, and we know how popular that is these days.
So now I'm hooked. I discovered that there's another, much more extensive one alone the Ohlone Greenway in Berkeley this weekend. Does anyone know where there might be others? Funny thing, but pushups, chin-ups, jumping jacks and the like are actually (gasp!) harder work than the machines at the gym. Almost like those drill sergeants were onto something . .

Sun, July 27, 2008 - 9:44 PMCool I did not know about the Lake Merrit one . . . I run there frequently, but not past the theatre. I'll check it out . . .
And yeah, the "athletes" pictured on the boards are quite something. Dolphin shorts really never go out of style . . . um, right?

Sat, July 26, 2008 - 1:22 PMI think there's one along the South Shore of Alameda. It starts behind South Shore Shopping Center (aka Alameda Towne Center). -

Expand park area in general
Sun, July 27, 2008 - 9:54 PMYa, I wish there was more investment in this kind of thing for people. I was thinking recently while the street is closed at the edge of Lake Merrit, that they should just keep it closed and make more park area. I mean there is already macarthur going one way two blocks down. We could totally have a large field there to saunter around or play gleefully.
